Greenland 2018

Greenland 2018

On April 17th friends Leo Carew and Matt Hay are destined for the ice-bound coast of Greenland where they’ve lined up a serious adventure. The plan? Climb as many unclimbed mountains as the conditions, their skills and energy allow (they’ve identified a dozen in total) and to also conduct crucial climate change research at the remote Roslin Glacier.

The guys have been assembling gear to keep warm below -30’C and for a full month exposed to the Greenland wilderness. A shipping container is now steaming toward the start-point of their expedition filled with enough food for the 6,500 calories that they will require each day as well as rifles, flares, transceivers, sat-phones and beacons (their last resort against polar-bears, avalanches and emergencies). Most importantly (we like to think) they’re also packing a whole lot of Glen Lyon beans which we hope will keep them well caffeinated throughout their adventure.

Matt and Leo are no strangers to our part of Scotland with both having strong connections to the local area (regularly camping and mountaineering near Aberfeldy, and completing the Great Kindrochit Quadrathalon at Loch Tay in 2015). We’ve been thoroughly enjoying following their impressive training regime in the recent winter mountain conditions we’ve been experiencing lately and are always happy to see the guys finding time for a brew in the hills.

We wish Matt and Leo every success on this expedition.  Not only have they an enviable spirit of adventure but they are using the profile that the expedition offers to raise money for both Trees for Life, and Anxiety UK. If you would like to support either of these excellent charities, you can find their Pledgit page here.
